Biology Unit 2: Cells and Diseases

This unit will last through the winter holidays.

We will be studying cells and diseases.
Because many of the agents of infectious diseases are single celled organism this is a natural and interesting window to study life at its smallest level, while also learning about issues that affect students lives and the world around them.

The unit will be divided into three sections, each of which will end in a notebook check and either a quiz or test.

In the first section we will introduce the unit, learn about the parts of a eukaryotic cell, types of cells (eukaryotic and prokaryotic) and protists. This section will wrap up on November 9. See the next entry for more details.

The second section will focus on bacteria, prokaryotic cells, the spread of disease and the human immune system. The quiz for it will be on Dec. 2.

The third section will focus on mitosis and cancer and will end with the unit test on Dec. 16.
